Ibiza
Ibiza Capital Ibiza is located in the Municipality of Eivissa. Its grounds that are declared as World Heritage Site, are full of narrow streets and monumental buildings as the Cathedral." Its construction was ordered by King Philip II of Spain, this way giving Eivissa a strategic role in the defence policy for the Mediterranean. The aim of the defensive building was to stop the Berber pirates’ invasions. It was the Italian engineer Giovanni Batista Calvi who conducted the ambitious project of erecting these defensive walls. Afterwards, Jacobo Paleazzo Fratín enlarged the initial project and carried it out. The construction started in 1554 and it is believed to have lasted 31 years. Ibiza is the smallest of the Balearic Islands, and lies to the south east of the other two, Majorca and Menorca. An extremely popular holiday destination for several decades, since the late nineties, Ibiza has risen to prominence amongst younger travellers as the clubbing capital of Europe, and during the summer high season, big name DJs from all over the world de-camp to the island's luxury villas for a three month long period of excess and revelry, and millions of clubbers in day-glo T-shirts and baggy trousers descend on the island in order to get as messy as possible.
